The affirmation of current society, in which economic and production values override the values of an urban culture based on the balanced use of the resources and an equal division of wealth, drives urban housing production into a mercantile approach controlled by the market and consumerism.
And while observe the affirmation and dissemination of the new skills that introduce different forms of exchange, encounter and communication into our daily lives, we witness the difficult and contrasting advance of innovation in the collective housing sector. A difficulty felt particularly sharply in Portugal and analysed in this book, which has enabled us to examine a situation that expresses the level of contemporary urban culture and its consequences in the forms of our artificial landscape.
The cases presented aim to document the most important characteristics, which we also consider to be the most successful, in so-called collective housing architecture over the last years. A sequence of cases that find a different expression for investigation and materialization which, amongst the more generalized trends, may be considered as a possible reference point for lines of development according to the conditioning factors imposed at the building stage.
