There were two solutions for the enlargement of the Lamego Museum. Attaching a new body that would incorporate the functions less suited to the existing building or constructing a new museum that would integrate and incorporate the old one while creating a new image for the institution on the European Circuit.
The second option, which was finally chosen, conjures up the image of a glass cloche placed over a relic.
The existing building is the lynchpin in the project; revealing itself as an architecturally defined element of great importance in the urban history of the city of Lamego.
The architecture proposed for the new Lamego Museum is composed of a volume in steel and glass, laid out as if it were a new building taking on the function of a second skin or cladding for the existing museum. A container to improve enduring functions, sealing new spaces and preserving the existing building. A 18 metre high parallelepiped with a 78 x 51 metre base. A transparent supervention that permits the preservation of an old/contemporary urban image, benefiting the architecture and the urban context of the city of Lamego.
The vertical transparent panels reveal the profile of the old building, which is preserved intact inside, interacting with fast movement of urban life like an inseparable mixture of volumes and happenings.
